The first, and most important part of the Halloween party is the theme, and the costumes people wear are very important. While you don’t have to set a theme, it can be incredibly fun to set any number of themes.

Fun Adult Halloween Party Themes:

Your home may be the right place for the party, but you may want to consider having your Halloween party somewhere else if you have small children. Mask Making
Use paper plates, a hole punch, and scissors to make mask.

Use hole punch on sides of mask and cut out eye holes to fit child’s face. Let them decorate the plate with glitter glue, gel pens, markers, glue, odds and ends of fabric, feathers etc. to create a cool, creepy, or fun mask. Once mask is dry, attach string to sides using the holes and tie on child’s face.

Silly Hats

Pick up old hats from a thrift store or purchase some witches hats from a craft store such as Oriental Trading company or the likes. Decorate with glue, ribbon, feathers, glitter etc.

Play Dough

Make a batch of orange, black, and green play dough (or additional colors). Set it out on a table with Halloween cookie cutters and wooden dowel pieces for rolling and let kids play away.

Play Dough Ingredients:

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
Few drops of food coloring

Mix flour, salt and oil, and slowly add the water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until dough becomes stiff. Turn out onto wax paper and let cool. Knead the play dough with your hands until of proper consistency. Use as is, or divide into balls and add a few drops of the food coloring to make green, black, and orange.

Paper Pumpkin Ornaments

Materials:
1-2 pieces of orange construction paper
1 piece of green construction paper
1 piece of brown construction paper
scissors
paper cutter (optional)
paper clips and/or stapler
string

Directions:
Cut the orange pieces of construction paper into 1″ wide strips (each strip will be 1″ x 11″). Then, shorten some of the strips so that you have (1) 6″, (2) 7″, (2) 9″, and (2) 11″ long pieces.

Gather the strips of paper together (with the ends flush) and place the smallest one in the middle. Order them by size so that the largest strip is on the outside. Secure with a paper clip or staple (I prefer the paper clip so that I can keep adding more elements). Line up the opposite ends so that they are together like the top.

Cut a brown strip of paper 1/4″ by 3″ long for the stem. To make it curl, wrap the paper around a pencil and hold it in place while you count to 20 (or sing the ABC song).
Cut out two leaf shapes from the green paper (ours were sort of like pairs of bunny ears).

Add the stem, leaves, and a piece of string to the paper clip at the top.

Decorations

The Halloween decor you use will make your party. Too often, people go very cheap on this, and the few decorations they have are sporadic, and appear out of place. There is a list of items you must have to ensure your party isn’t bland.

* Black & Orange Crepe Pap
* Black & Orange Balloons
* Realistic Body Parts
* Plenty of Skeletons
* Cobwebs
* Fog Machine
* Black Lights

Of course, you can add to this list, but these will be the essentials to get your party started. Decide which rooms that party will be taking place in. Usually, it is best to get a large central location and keep your décor there, while adding a little bit to the bathrooms and kitchen.

Cobwebs should be placed in the upper corners of the rooms, and perhaps have a single wall covered in web with a large spider placed in the middle. If you are really creative, make a “body” on the wall wrapping pillows inside of the fake web.

Scatter body parts along the floor and in areas where people won’t be walking. In the corners, place skeletons to give the room a full effect of horror. Just make sure you keep it in good taste, and don’t go too intense if you plan on small children attending the party.

Food

This is the second most important part of the party. People will remember your decorations as well as your food. Don’t try to do too much with it, but have a little fun.

Chips and soda will be a requirement. Not everyone will want you creepy foods you create, and most people might like looking at them, but they might not want to try what we suggest. These backup options work for the more sensitive eaters.

Let’s take a look at some basic ideas for creepy treats.

Bloody Punch – We all know that punch is blood red, but you can take it to a creepy level. Many stores sell “body part” candy at Halloween time. Get a series of fingers and eye balls and mix them into the bowl. Make sure you do this once people start arriving, as they won’t last more than a few hours in the punch. Some of these items have candy bones in the center, and can be a grotesque addition to the drink if you pick those up. Check out this fun recipe for Mummys Hand Punch.

Bloody Eye Balls – This is really simple. Make a batch of popcorn balls and dye the popcorn red. Allow them to dry for a period of time, and then add a black dot of food dye to the center for this dramatic effect. For something a bit more elaborate try Demon Deviled Eyeballs, a tasty appetizer everyone seems to love.

Broken Teeth – The last of the simple ideas consists of candy corn and Hawaiian Punch concentrate. Break the corn pieces down and mix them with the syrup for a creepy look. You can use any other red syrup you like, if you have trouble finding the punch.

Entertainment

For Halloween, you will want some basic monster music blasting on the stereo that people can dance too. While the guests arrive, haunted sounds are fine, but for the party to begin kick off traditional favorites. Some of those include:

Activities

Depending on the ages of those attending, you will need to have some activities besides dancing and costume judging setup. There are a few ideas we’ll share in this article, being creative will make for better results.

Killer in the Dark
This is an old fashioned game. People will draw from a hat a piece of paper. Each will either blank, have the letter V, or the letter K. Blank pieces of paper mean a person is not affected when the lights go out, V is a victim and K is for the killer. When the pieces of paper are handed out, the lights go out for 30 seconds. The person with the V will lie down, and the killer will tap another person and they die. When the lights on, the group has one guess as to who the murderer is, and if caught the round ends, and a new batch is set.

Eerie Scavenger Hunt
You take the traditional scavenger hunt, and break it down in the house. Have people dig through bloody creations to get clues to find some hidden prize. Of course, for added fun….make them eat something really gross before they can win it.

Printable Halloween Games
If you are going to have kids of any age at your Halloween party, it might be a great idea to have some printable Halloween games they can play or color on. You can turn these games into contest of sorts with prizes or you can just let them entertain themselves by playing along. These are really neat ways to let kids join in the fun without having to worry they may get scared.

Halloween Graveyard Cake Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup water
1/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs

Frosting:
1/4 cup butter or margarine
3 tablespoons milk
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Halloween Graveyard Cake Decorations:

18 cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies
9 cream-filled oval vanilla sandwich cookies
1 cup marshmallow sauce
1 small package Nutter Butter cookies
Green and brown decorator’s icing or tube gel
Pumpkin candies and gummy worms, optional

Halloween Graveyard Cake Directions:

In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, water and cocoa; bring to a boil. Add to flour mixture; beat well. Beat in sour cream and eggs.

Pour into a greased 9-in. x 13-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Bake at 350 F for 35-38 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine butter, milk and cocoa; bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and stir in sugar and vanilla. Pour over the warm cake. Crumble chocolate cookies and sprinkle over frosting while still warm to give the appearance of dirt. Cool.

For tombstones, use icing to decorate vanilla cookies with names or faces of the ‘deceased’ and place on cake. For ghosts, you can cover the nutterbutter cookies with marshmallow cream and use icing to add eyes and mouths as desired.

Just before serving, add pumpkins and gummy worms if desired.

Gross Halloween Snack Mix Ingredients:

*Caramels
* Candy Corn
* Gummy Worms
* Raisins
* Mini Marshmellows
* Pretzel Sticks
* Cheerios or Chex Cereal
* Nuts (be sure no one has peanut allergies)
* Tubed Gel Frosting in Red or Green
* Black and Orange paper cups

Gross Halloween Snack Mix Directions:

Give each child a paper cup and let them scoop the ingredients into their bowl mixing and creating as they go along. For that extra creepy look drizzle some red or green gel frosting on top of the mixture.

**For some extra activity fun you can have some markers, glue, googly eyes, feathers, etc. available for the kids to decorate their cups or bags before they add their Gross Halloween Snack Mix.

Where Did “Trick or Treat” Come From?

Perhaps one of the most popular and widespread Halloween traditions is ringing the doorbell and saying “trick or treat” in exchange for candy. This is done by millions of children every year, but few could tell you where this practice comes in the history of Halloween. It was not always a part of the holiday.

For thousands of years, Halloween was merely a blend of pagan rituals and Christian customs. Ceremonies and festivals were held on the day, and people did dress up in costumes. However, it wasn’t until the second half of the nineteenth century that these traditions, along with others, began to make it to America. An influx of new immigrants meant new traditions, and these contributed to how Halloween is celebrated today.

“Trick or treat” was one such tradition brought from England. During all Souls’ Day parades, the poor would beg for food. More fortunate families would give the poor “soul cakes” in return for the promise that the poor would pray for their dead relatives. This idea eventually trickled down to children, and led to the Halloween tradition we know and love today.

A Group Gathering

By the 1950’s, Halloween and trick-or-treating had become a fun way for communities to spend time together. Halloween parties became popular, and many neighborhoods would go trick-or-treating together. Trick-or-treating was an inexpensive activity that people could bond over. Though by this time the history of Halloween had already been forgotten the traditions continued to grow.

The Tricks and Treats of Today

Halloween has changed very much throughout its long history. While as little as 50 years ago, people handed out candy apples and caramel corn, today the goodies typically consist of Butterfingers and Hershey’s Bars. Yet, despite the change that has occurred throughout the history of Halloween, the traditions that began the holiday are still remembered by a few select people—and it is their responsibility to make sure that it is never forgotten.
